Thomas Kelly eventually became a doctor in 2017 after graduating
This former physician left medicine to create an AI tool, Thomas Kelly eventually became a doctor in 2017 after graduating from medical school, a vocation he had long dreamed of as a child. However, Kelly discovered that the job was not what he had anticipated once he began to practice. “I had a very limited time as a doctor. In an ideal world, he stated, “I would spend as much time with patients as they require, I would understand their family, I would remember them vividly, and then I would check in on them on a regular basis.” In actuality, though, he experienced “incredible burnout” while working in the area, just like many other physicians.
In an effort to alleviate the burden on physicians and other healthcare professionals, Kelly developed an AI tool that helps record medical appointments, creates clinical notes, and more.
The 33-year-old is currently the CEO and co-founder of Heidi, an AI medical scribe. The business was valued at $465 million when it launched its $65 million Series B financing in October.

Early investigations
This former physician left medicine to create an AI tool, Kelly’s primary care physician encouraged him to become a doctor while he was growing up in Melbourne, Australia. “I simply adored my primary care physician… Kelly remarked, “He was like the pinnacle of using your intelligence and knowledge for good.” “His plans were always fantastic. In addition to having excellent bedside manners and being warm, he was always highly perceptive and knowledgeable.
He was still affected by the encounter. Before opting to pursue a career in medicine, he experimented with various interests in college, including math and computer technology. He started medical school at the University of Melbourne in 2013.
Kelly began a side business when he was a medical student, tutoring people who wanted to become doctors and posting instructional videos on YouTube.
To his astonishment, the videos started drawing a large number of students more than he could manage at the time and what had begun as a pastime gradually expanded into a tiny enterprise. Kelly started experimenting with creating artificial intelligence technologies in order to better manage his time while running his tutoring business.
Kelly stated, “The first AI product I ever tried to build was an interview tutor that people could practice with.” He stated that by 2020, over 20,000 students were utilizing this “Oscar” tool, which gave them the opportunity to practice speaking with a medical interviewer.
Heidi was born from that seed, he claimed.
Kelly started to see Oscar’s wider potential as it became better. Kelly remarked, “There was no single lightbulb moment,” but he did come to the conclusion that if an AI tool could comprehend a student’s communication with a medical examiner, it might also do the same for a patient and a physician.

Making the leap
By 2021, Kelly had to make a crucial choice: focus entirely on his medical career and start training in vascular surgery, or take a career sabbatical and work on developing his AI tool to benefit physicians and clinicians as well as medical students.
Kelly declared, “I took the leap.” “I felt that if I don’t take this chance, I will always regret it.” How many surgical trainees can develop this product because they have sufficient math skills and business experience? Not many, I believe.
Perhaps it was arrogance, but I believed that if anyone could launch this business, it would be me. Let’s see what happens,” he remarked.
In order to devote all of his energy to creating Heidi, Kelly formally quit his medical career in 2021. These days, the technology helps physicians delegate certain administrative duties, such writing clinical notes and documentation.
Heidi has received around $100 million in finance and has developed into a powerful company.
“I just did the introspection at one point. What are the things you’re going to regret if you’re sitting in an assisted living facility with your family around you? And in my case, I would have regretted not trying,” Kelly remarked.
