Earlier this year, Manus made a splash by presenting what it claimed to be the first “general” AI agent in history—a system designed to do more than just react.

Manus was developed under the Butterfly Effect AI product studio of Chinese entrepreneur Xiao Hong, who was referred to as “Red” in the country’s IT circles.
The Creator
Huazhong University of Science and Technology-trained software developer Xiao had previously developed extensive productivity solutions that were utilized by millions of people. He introduced Butterfly Effect in 2022 and Monica, a browser assistant driven by AI that aggregates several huge language models, shortly after.
Timeline
Manus was operational by March 2025.
At a $500 million value, it had raised $75 million by April.
Its yearly recurring revenue surpassed $100 million by the middle of the year.
The corporation expanded teams in Tokyo and San Francisco while discreetly moving its headquarters from China to Singapore.
Meta-Purchasing
In order to strengthen its autonomous agent capabilities, tech giant Meta announced on December 30, 2025, that it would be purchasing Manus AI for an estimated $2 billion.
Meta has made no secret of its goal to scale general-purpose AI agents throughout its ecosystem, from productivity to commerce to creative tools, thus the purchase is strategic for the company.
Manus offers a working framework for autonomous agents that can be implemented at scale, as well as revenue momentum.
Manus will continue to be a stand-alone solution as its underlying technology is included into Meta’s larger AI stack, according to the company.
In the meanwhile, the agreement resolves geopolitical and regulatory concerns by completely severing Manus’s remaining connections with China.
